Liya joined the Carabetta lab as a PhD Candidate in Translational Biomedical Sciences. She graduated with an M.D. from the Moscow State University of Medicine and Dentistry, and completed a residency program and clinical research in infectious diseases. Outside of the lab, she likes traveling and short weekend getaways to explore new cities.

Mohamed Halawa

Mohamed obtained his Ph.D. in structural biology from the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom. Prior to this, he earned a master’s degree in biotechnology from Northumbria University, United Kingdom and a bachelor's degree in pharmaceutical sciences from Cairo University, Egypt. This is his third postdoctoral position, following positions at Baylor College of Medicine, Texas, and the University of Colorado. When not in lab, Mohamed enjoys soccer and video games.

Lama Jadalla is a second-year medical student at Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine. She is interested in becoming a pediatric physician. She went to undergraduate school at Rutgers University Camden. She enjoys traveling to new countries and learning about the different cultures, especially exploring fashion trends and the food. Fun fact about her is that she cooked for and bathed an elephant in Thailand!

Currently, he is a second-year medical student at Cooper Medical School and hopes to specialize in infectious diseases afterwards. Tabitha Jaison recently completed the CMSRU Post-Baccalaureate program in 2021-2022. She is from Fairfield, NJ and I graduated from Ramapo College of NJ in 2020 with a B.S. in Biology and a minor in Gerontology. Fun facts about Tabitha are that she is a cat person, enjoys going to the gym and doing yoga, and she used to practice classical Indian dancing competitively for 10 years.

April is a first-year medical student at CMSRU. She is originally from Camp Hill, Pennsylvania and completed her undergraduate studies at Saint Joseph’s University with a major in Biology and minors in Chemistry and Philosophy. At SJU, she conducted microbiology research investigating E. albertii, a newly-discovered attaching and effacing pathogen. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her friends, family, and most importantly, her cat named Buddy.

Ian is interested in surgery and has experience researching mechanisms of metastasis in pancreatic cancer in the Stanger lab at Perelman School of Medicine. Jessica grew up in Westfield, NJ then attended the University of Vermont. She graduated in 2022 with a BS in microbiology and a minor in molecular genetics. While at UVM, she performed a meta-analysis on bromodomain genes and their association with Tamoxifen resistance in breast cancer. She spent a year working on the R&D team at OPS diagnostics before beginning at CMSRU. For fun, she loves spending time with her boyfriend and their dog, Roco. She is also learning to crochet and enjoys reading.

Although originally from Rockland County, NY, Andrew has spent most of his life in Mount Laurel, NJ. He graduated from Penn State University in 2021 with a B.S. in Immunology and Infectious Disease, along with minors in Microbiology, Political Science, and Global Health. Andrew’s medical interests include sleep disorders, cardiovascular disease, and of course, antibiotic resistance. In his free time, he enjoys watching sports, reading medical literature, and working on cars. A fun fact about Andrew is that he used to be a competitive chess player!

Rahul graduated from UNC Chapel Hill majoring in biology and minoring in chemistry. While at UNC, he conducted materials science research at the Bai Lab, where he worked on making a deep-tissue pulse oximeter with a PLGA microneedle array interface. Prior to joining CMSRU, he worked for Pfizer’s vaccine R&D department conducting research on their COVID-19, flu, RSV, and Lyme disease vaccines. He has an interest in microbiology and antibiotic stewardship which led him to the Carabetta lab. In his free time, Rahul enjoys playing flamenco guitar, writing poetry, and cooking. Fun fact: Rahul has tried, and then subsequently regretted trying, a Carolina Reaper!
